The Project
Having produced several videos before
entering the world of stereoscopy, I have been keen to try
my hand at producing 3D video's. With the advent of High
definition camcorders and projectors, the potential quality is
now comparable to that of 3D still images when projected onto
the silver screen. The cost of HD camcorders is falling
and the smaller size of camcorders in general allow for a
satisfactory optical separation of a twinned pair.
My first task was to consider certain
factors that would impact on my choice of camcoder.
Cost - I set myself a budget of
£1,500 for the two cameras.
Control - I needed cameras that could
be synchronised in use
Resolution - High Definition or
standard PAL definition!
Media - Mini DV, Hard Disk, or DVD!
and the production software required.
Size - The physical size and weight
of the camcorders
Mounting - Tripod legs, head and quick
release plate.

Production Software
When producing 3D videos, software will be
needed to:-
| 1 |
Capture video from left (L)
and right (R) cameras to Computer (PC).
Also to split L and R video
into scenes.
I have opted for Ulead Video
Studio 11 plus (UVS) to capture video from my cameras. I
did this after having some difficulty with using the supplied
Sony software which saves the files with suffix 'mt2' format.
Although recognised by StereoMovie Maker, the audio was not
present.
I capture the video from each
video into their own folders with scene detection; this can be
done and needs to be done as the next process. UVS has a
device control facility and so it is a simple matter to find the
starting point for capture rather than capturing from the
beginning of the tape.

| 2 |
Align, trim, resize and combine L and R scenes. |
| 3 |
Assemble scenes into video,
add transitions, effects, captions and sound. Also export
to required video format.
|
USE:-
Ulead VideoStudio 10 or later - To capture
and split left and right scenes.
StereoMovie Maker - To align, trim and
resize combined left and right scenes.
ProShow Producer - To add transition, sound,
captions and to assemble video in various formats
Stereo videos can be viewed on a 3D monitor,
such as the Zalman using Stereoscopic Player from
3Dtv
