Joseph Aldous (1875 - 1972)

Joseph ALDOUS was the second child of Edgar and Mary; he was born in New Street, Tintwistle Cheshire on Boxing Day 26th December 1875. At the time of the 1901 census he was living with his parents and the rest of his family at 17 Haywood Park, Deepcar.  He was employed in the Stocksbridge steelworks of Samuel Fox & Company Ltd as a Wire Cleaner.

At some time after the census Joseph moved back to Lancashire, where he met and married his wife Eliza NEWTON, who it is believed, was born in the Rochdale area. The couple were married in 1902 in Rochdale and had two children, Elizabeth who was born in 1903, and Wilfred who was born in 1914.

From around 1910 Joseph was living in Rochdale were he worked in the cotton mills as a Spinner. The family first lived in the Wardle district before moving to Morley Street and then Collie Street, both in the Heybrook district. After retirement during the Second World War, Joseph worked at Wilby’s sweet factory, which was the family business of the Whittles family.

Joseph was a keen musician, playing an American Organ which proudly stood in the parlour at Collie Street.  He also played Cello and was quite a handyman until his death in 1972.
